USGS Global Visualization Viewer: Browser Requirements

The USGS Global Visualization Viewer requires a Web Browser with Java 2 and JavaScript support. Some browsers may require the installation of a plug-in for Java 2 support. Java 1.4 or newer should work. Not all combinations of browsers and plug-ins have been tested.

Note that not all versions of the browsers listed have been tested. Earlier versions of browsers may work. If problems are encountered, upgrading to a newer browser will probably fix the problem. Also, installing the most recent Java plug-in from Sun may improve performance, especially when viewing ASTER data in an area with many scenes.

Please be aware that GloVis no longer officially supports Netscape 4.x browsers. When using Netscape 4.x, problems with the applet may occur.

Known Problems

Several browsers have problems in their Java and/or Javascript implementations. These are the known problems:

On Apple Mac OS X, the scene list scrollbar is not displayed and navigating the list using the keyboard does not scroll the list. Other visual anomalies exist as well.
Issues were found for Apple Mac OS users when using IE and Netscape Browsers. IE and Netscape both have a bug that only allow the browser to use the Java Plugin 1.3.1, even if a newer version is installed. Apple has released Java 1.4.1 on Apple Mac OS X. However, currently the only browser that supports Apples Java Plugin 1.4.1 for applets is Apple's own Safari Browser. Therefore we recommend using the Safari Browser when viewing GloVis.
Netscape 7.x sometimes does not refresh the left side of the viewer properly. Minimizing and redisplaying the Netscape window will correct it.
Netscape 7.x sometimes does not refresh the menu bar properly. Temporarily covering the menu bar with another window and uncovering it will correct it.

How do I install the Java plug-in?

The Java plug-in can be downloaded from www.java.com. On that page, follow the Java Software Download link to get instructions for downloading and installing the plug-in for your Operating System and Browser.
